Chimneys, and our fireplaces add a beautiful charm to our homes and properties. They enhance the appearance, the appeal, and the aesthetic of our homes and dwellings. There is perhaps nothing more welcoming than a cabin or lodge nestled in the forest, with a beautiful chimney emitting sweet smoke from a warm fire and welcoming hearth.
But let’s face it. When is the last time you thought about chimney maintenance? When is the last time you had your chimney cleaned? If you can’t remember (or never have had your chimney serviced) you’re not alone. Most Americans actually neglect their chimneys and fireplace components. We get it. It’s one more thing to deal with, and oftentimes, if its not an immediate emergency, we focus on other things that are.
But, chimneys require maintenance and care like any other aspect of our home. And while your cracked driveway or peeling paint job might be an eyesore, a dirty or damaged chimney could actually present a safety hazard. Chimneys play a crucial role in the safe operation of your fireplace, firebox, and flue. They allow you to safely burn material in your home – as they evacuate gasses, and contain flame within their walls. Generally, fireplaces are built tough – of brick, masonry, cement or stone. But even these surfaces can age. And if they become cracked, or the caulking fails, this could degrade the effectiveness of your fireplace, and put your home or structure at risk. Further, if chimneys aren’t cleaned, thick creosote (a hard, tar-like substance) can form on the inside of your flue and chimney liner, and block the escape of hot smoke. Or worse, creosote can combust, causing a chimney fire. Best to avoid all of these things!
Luckily, it’s easy to keep your chimney in great, safe, working condition. Through simple cleaning and maintenance, our team can help you keep your chimney as good as new. There are a few benefits here. One, you’ll eliminate most safety risks associated with your chimney. Two, you’ll extend the life of your chimney, and avoid costly repairs. Finally, a quality, functioning chimney that has been well maintained will increase the value of your home or structure. Chimney care is really a win-win-win.
Best of all, chimney care is easy. In fact, we do almost all of the work for you.
It all starts with a phone call. Give us a ring, and let us know where you live, and what kind of chimney and fireplace you have. Have a traditional masonry fireplace and firebox with a lined chimney? Great. Have a wood burning or pellet stove? We can work on that. Unsure of what you have, or dealing with a new home? We’re happy to come out and do an assessment. Our team of licensed and certified chimney sweeps (chimney cleaners in industry lingo) will come to your residence, and conduct a full Level 1 or Level 2 inspection and appropriate cleaning. We’ll ensure everything is in working order, and share any issues we might have uncovered during our work. Best of all, we’ll leave a written report with you, as you determine how to proceed with any required work.
Need us for a second opinion, or to conduct a Level 3 inspection prior to renovation work? We can do that. Our team is also able to make repairs, upgrades, or conduct replacements of parts, including dampers, brick masonry, shielding, baffles, grates, and caps. We do it all. Was your local municipal code updated, and now you need chimney work? We can help there too. Did you know most cities require that the top of your chimney be at least a certain height from your roof? We can help find this information, and ensure your home and property are in compliance.
Our team is comprised of trained experts who have worked on chimneys and fireplaces for years. We are certified in accordance with the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and remain up-to-date on our licenses and certifications. We maintain an incredibly high standard for our work, and are concerned first and foremost with safety, and providing superior chimney service to our customers. Chimney maintenance and care is a marathon – it doesn’t end after one servicing or cleaning – and we would like to earn your trust and come back to perform work for you, time and time again.
We offer a range of services, from inspections to cleaning to hardware upgrades to complete rebuilds, installs, and modifications. Want to switch from a wood-burning fireplace to a wood burning or pellet stove? We can help. Want to redo your brick masonry, or add a stone veneer? We can do that too. Give us a call today to learn about our service options and we’ll get your questions answered right away.
Chimney care is a phenomenal investment for your home – both in preserving its value, and in the cost savings you’ll enjoy.

Chimney Services
Chimney Sweep
Chimney Cleaning:
We offer chimney cleaning services to extend the life of your chimney and fireplace, and remove dangerous creosote deposits from within your firebox, and chimney. Our trained and courteous crew specializes in this type of work, and will provide outstanding service. Our chimney sweep and chimney cleaning services help to remove dangerous creosote deposits from this inside of your chimney, thereby reducing the risk of chimney fires, and allowing you to fully enjoy your fireplace and chimney. In addition to cleaning wood burning fireplaces and chimneys, we’re also able to clean a number of other chimney applications: We offer woodstove cleaning – which should be conducted at least annually. Woodstoves must be cleaned, just like your firebox and chimney, to ensure safe and effective operation. Oil and Gas Chimney cleaning – Do you use an oil burning device and accompanying chimney to heat your home? These must be cleaned too in order to maintain safe operation. When heating season is over (generally by Spring) give us a call to schedule a cleaning of your oil chimney. |
Chimney Repair
Chimney Repairs:
Do you suspect your chimney is damaged? Can you observe cracked brick, masonry, or a loose damper or liner? We can help. We conduct a wide range of repairs and rebuild services on chimneys, flues, fireboxes, and fireplaces. Give us a call and let us know what you’ve observed, and we’ll talk through what the repair options may be; and if needed, we’ll come out for an assessment. Do you smell smoke in your family room or home when you use your fireplace? This may be a sign of damage to your chimney liner, or could mean your chimney flue is obstructed. Luckily, we can help. Generally, when conducting repairs, we’ll also conduct a complimentary inspection to ensure there are no other issues with your chimney and fireplace. We’ll let you know what we find, and complete the work consistent with your requirements. What are our services? Brick Repair. We offer spot cutting, which can fix minor damage to bricks and masonry. Spot cutting is generally un-invasive, and can help to repair and restore your chimney and brickwork. Masonry Work. We can conduct masonry work, either replacing individual or multiple bricks, or systematically replacing damaged bricks throughout your entire chimney. |
Chimney Lining
Chimney Lining:
We also work on chimney lining. Is your lining old or damaged? This can be problematic, because broken or damaged chimney liners can allow super heated smoke to enter your chimney, and the rest of your home, and potentially damage your structure, or start a fire. Chimney liners play a critical role in generating a vacuum, which sucks up smoke and moves it efficiently out of your chimney. If your lining is damaged, this affect may not occur, and could put your home at risk. Suspect a damaged liner? Call us today and we can make a repair. |
Chimney Rebuild
Chimney rebuild:
Do you have an older fireplace and chimney, or one that has sustained damage during a storm or other event? Do you think a complete rebuild may be necessary? Let us make an assessment, and determine what your options are. Our rebuilds help to replace extensive cracking in brickwork, removed damaged bricks, and rebuild your fireplace to its original grandeur. Rebuild projects can be either partial, or complete – and can take different lengths of time depending on the need. Regardless of your needs, we can complete a chimney rebuild and install new, more efficient and reliable components to keep your chimney functioning flawlessly for years to come. We won’t oversell you on unnecessary services, and will deliver value and quality – every time. |
Chimney Waterproofing
Chimney Waterproofing:
Chimneys, and brick masonry can take a lot of abuse – especially from rain, snow, and the freezing cold. While it may seem surprising, water can do a considerable amount of damage to brick and masonry chimneys. We’re not so much talking about rain – but more about water seeping into the brickwork and degrading the grout, or hurting the brick itself. Perhaps the greatest risk comes when water seeps into and between brick masonry work, and then freezes. When water freezes, it expands ever so slightly, and can subtly force bricks away from one another. This in turn can allow more water deeper and deeper into your chimney brick work, which can cause increasing damage – to your chimney itself, and do your attic, insulation, and beyond. Avoid all of this by waterproofing your chimney. While we don’t recommend this service for all chimneys, it certainly makes sense for some. Waterproofing can unlock considerable cost savings, and can help you avoid costly repairs to chimneys, brickwork, and masonry damaged by water and freezing temperatures. |
Fireplace Installation
Fireplace installation:
Are you considering buying a new wood stove, oil stove, or fireplace insert? We can help install it! We have experience with a range of fireplace types, designs, and configurations, and are more than happy to install your new fireplace. Fireplace replacement or installation is also a great opportunity to conduct an inspection of your firebox, chimney, and flue – or whatever configuration you may have in place. Did you install your own fireplace, but may be having issues? Give us a call for an installation inspection to ensure safety and a quality experience. Are you on the fence about replacing your configuration with a new fireplace or stove versus refurbishing what you currently have? Our team can help walk you through the process for each, discuss the upsides and downsides of each option, and move forward with a project plan that works best for you. Call today. We look forward to helping with all of your fireplace installation needs, and can’t wait to help you further beauty and enhance your home! |
Dryer Vent Cleaning
Dryer Vent Cleaning:
While not directly linked to your fireplace, we can assist with dryer vent cleaning – which will save you time, and potentially a LOT of money. Dryer vent maintenance and routine cleaning are absolutely critical to the safe and efficient operation of your home. When dryer vents become clogged overtime (with lint and other debris) they move less air – cutting down on the efficiency of your machine. They could also cause a fire hazard. Our trained professionals clean from the outside, and inside of your home to ensure your vent lines are clear, and functioning at their best. We begin in the home, and use brushes, blowers, and vacuums to remove debris from your vent line. We clean from inside out, blowing material out through the line, and collecting it outside of your home, where we clean and dispose of it. Did you know animals can nest in your dryer vent lines? We can take care of this – so no fear. Routine maintenance is the key, however. We recommend cleaning out your dryer vent line at least once a year, even twice yearly if you use your machine heavily. Not only will this reduce the risk of fire – it will also extend the life of your machine and help you avoid costly replacements. |
Chimney Cap Installation
Chimney Cap Installation:
First, what is a chimney cap? A Chimney cap is a protective covering installed on the top, and outside of your chimney itself. The cap seals your chimney, protecting it from rain, animals, dust, birds, leaves, insects, and anything else that may make its way into your home through an open chimney. Chimney caps are also referred to as spark arrestors, spark stoppers, rain guards, or rain protectors. We install chimney caps. If you have a cap, and would like us to install it, we can help. Additionally, we’re also able to purchase caps for you, and install them ourselves. This saves you time, and a trip to the store – plus you will know the cap has been installed correctly. Relatively new on the market are also chimney caps which double as dampers. These are a great alternative and not only keep unwanted material out, but help to keep energy costs down. In the industry, these are called Lock-Top Chimney Cap/Dampers, and they come in a few designs. These dampers are great because they do a few things in one simple, affordable unit. These caps are made of stainless steel, mount to the top of your chimney (outside) and can be opened from inside your home via a simple pull chain. The assemblies are equipped with springs, and open and close at the pull of the chain. They’re incredibly easy, and work to keep debris out, while letting smoke, heat and gasses out of your home. They’re far more efficient than traditional dampers, which are typically metal and don’t insulate well. These units are stainless steel, but come with a rubber gasket. When the damper/cap is lowered into place when you’re done using your chimney, the gasket will completely seal your chimney – not letting rain in, or any heat out. These units are easy to install on existing chimneys (we can help with this task) and will save you time and money on heating bills. We can’t recommend them enough. |
Commercial Chimney Care
Commercial Chimney Care and Maintenance:
We do commercial work too! You may not think much about it, but commercial buildings, and residential-style buildings used for business have chimneys, and also require chimney cleaning. Ever been to a cozy winery tasting room with a fireplace, or a waiting room somewhere with a nice wood or oil burning stove? Someone needs to be cleaning, maintaining, and servicing those. We can help. These services are easy to forget about – or entirely neglect. Luckily, we’re well positioned, and experienced with this type of work – and can tackle small to mid size commercial jobs. Having a bigger fireplace or chimney project you’re not sure about? Give us a call – we’ll be happy to talk about your project with you! |
Additional Services:
Need something for your chimney, fireplace, or stove that isn’t listed here? Please give us a call! Chances are we can help. Are you looking for a chimney fan? We can help. Looking to restore a stove, but can’t decide whether it’s safe or not? We’re on our way. We can help assess the status and integrity of a chimney, perform energy audits and make suggestions about the efficiency and safety of your setup – anything. Just give us a call, and we’ll be happy to work through the details with you, and get you on your way! |
Chimney Inspections
Chimney Inspections:
In addition to cleaning, chimney inspections are our most sought-after service. Inspections are important when you are buying or selling a home. But they’re also critical on an annual basis for safe chimney operation. We highly recommend you have your chimney inspected by a certified chimney sweep every year – even if you’re not using it consistently – or at all. There are a few reasons why. For one, whenever you burn any type of wood in your chimney, the smoke generates creosote deposits on the inside of your chimney. While a little buildup is fine, after years and years of deposits, creosote can block your smoke’s escape from the chimney, or could ultimately ignite causing a chimney fire. This could in turn significantly damage your structure. Don’t burn wood often? Creosote might not be a concern. But animals living in your chimney could be. Better to have one of our inspectors identify a bird nest and infestation than you lighting a fire only to discover animals in your chimney or flue. Then there’s chimney damage. Chimney damage can occur anytime during the year – especially during the winter as freezing temperatures can freeze any moisture that may have infiltrated your chimney’s brick work. This expansion can cause cracking within your masonry, which can degrade the overall integrity of your chimney. It’s much better to pay the money, get a simple inspection, and identify issues before the become problems. We offer three levels of chimney inspection:
Not sure which level of chimney inspection you need? That’s ok. Give our team a call today and we’ll walk you through a couple of basic questions. That will help our team identify the appropriate level of inspection, and provide the best possible service to you to keep your chimney functioning perfectly.

- Level I Chimney Inspection: Level I chimney inspections are the most common, and are ordered when the chimney is known to be in working condition, has been minimally used, and does not shows signs of wear, damage, or issue. A Level I Chimney inspection entails a brief top to bottom review of the chimney, the chimney cap, the firebox, and fireplace itself. If no issues are identified, the chimney sweep will complete a report, and leave it with the homeowner.
- Level II Chimney Inspection: A Level II Chimney Inspection is generally required under two circumstances: either a Level I Chimney Inspection yielded issues that must be further examined, or a homeowner intends on making a change to their chimney, fireplace, firebox, or flue – or when conditions change in some other capacity. Level II Chimney Inspections are more thorough than Level I Chimney Inspections, and focus on all components of the chimney in more detail.
- Level III Chimney Inspections: Level III Chimney inspections are the most detailed type of inspections, and spend a considerable amount of time analyzing potentially hazardous aspects of your chimney. These inspections spend time reviewing each component of the fireplace and chimney system, and identifying any potential hazards. Level III Inspections are only ordered if an issue is suspected or confirmed (and must be found) or if serious renovation work or changes have occurred.

Featured Article: Chimney FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why should I clean my chimney (or have it cleaned)?
Chimney cleaning is critical for safety, and for the effective operation of your chimney. A thorough cleaning of your fireplace, firebox, smoke chamber, chimney liner, and damper will remove creosote and soot buildup, and will allow smoke to flow freely through the chimney and out of your home.
How often do I need to clean my chimney?
We recommend at least an annual chimney cleaning – especially if you do a lot of burning throughout the year. Generally, it’s a good idea to pair a cleaning with an inspection – you’ll save money, and if any issues are identified, we can fix them on the spot. In the long run, this saves you time and money, and its safer for you and your home.
Does Chimney cleaning make a mess?
Yes and no - but not when you're working with us. Depending on your conditions, there could be a lot of junk built up in your chimney. We're talking about ash, creosote, and debris. When you - or a technician - start scrubbing that buildup out from your chimney, it will likely flake off into your firebox (your fireplace) and will likely introduce a thick dust into the work area around your fire place. This can present health concerns - and we recommend you wear a mask - and better yet, vacuum as you go. We use HEPA certified vacuums as we clean. These suck up any debris and dust scraped away from the chimney wall and liner - so they don't make a mess, or enter the air. If you have a vacuum, and the proper equipment, you could avoid a mess. Otherwise, your job will likely involve cleanup. In this light, it may make more sense for us to come out and help. Give us a call to discuss.
Is there an ideal time for chimney cleaning?
We suggest an inspection and cleaning just prior to your heaviest burning season. For most people, that means the winter – so we suggest an inspection and cleaning in Fall to late Fall. This inspection and cleaning allows you to catch any issues, and head into Winter with a clean chimney that won’t pose a potential safety risk during the year.
How often should I have my chimney inspected?
This question depends on a few factors. Again, annual inspections are never a bad idea. However, here are a few things to consider: If you use your chimney frequently, or your chimney is older, annual chimney inspections are a good idea. Ideally, pair these with a cleaning to save money. If you’ve had past issues, (depending on the type) inspections can also be helpful. If you’ve just reconfigured your heating systems, assembled or installed a new stove or flue components, or have made any kind of adjustments, an inspection is a good idea. Even if you haven’t used your chimney in a while, an inspection is a good idea. In some cases, animals and pests have been known to build nests inside of chimneys – which can cause obvious problems when you go to light a fire! An expert can assess the safety and functionality of your chimney and its components to ensure safe and effective operation. For the record, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 211 states that: “chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.”
Are Chimney fires a real thing?
Yes, unfortunately they are – and regular cleanings and inspections can help avoid them. It is estimated that chimney fires or chimney-related issues cause well over $220 million in damage annually in the US alone. Chimney fires occur primarily because of dirty chimneys and chimney components. When creosote and soot buildup in a chimney, they increase the hazard and risk of a fire. Creosote is a tar-like substance which forms inside a chimney. It’s a natural result of burning wood, and can be cleaned out. When its not, however, it can combust. If it does, creosote can burn for a long time, and cause damage to your structure.
Do county and municipal codes cover my chimney?
Yes. Today, most homes in the US are covered by some type of code – and this goes for chimneys too. Luckily, certified, reputable homebuilders will build according to code; so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. As we know, codes can change. These changes can make previously compliant structures; something you should be aware of. Luckily, certified chimney repair and maintenance companies monitor developments and changes in code, and can ensure your chimney is maintained appropriately.
Does chimney cleaning include cleaning black soot off the walls of my firebox (fireplace)?
Not as a part of our standard service. When businesses say they are chimney sweeps, they mean that they’re going to clean in your chimney – not necessarily in your fireplace. The focus of a chimney cleaning is to remove buildup and creosote deposits from within the chimney. This will allow you to burn wood safely in your fireplace. Cleaning the brick or masonry inside of your fireplace is a more time-consuming process that isn’t included in cleaning. We can do it for an extra charge, but unfortunately it’s not included as a part of our standard service.
My damper is broken. Can you fix it?
Yes, but this depends on the type of damage. Dampers that have simply become disconnected (or unseated) can be moved back into position. But dampers that are physically broken or have holes in them (due to age, corrosion, rust, etc) should be replaced. This is actually a great opportunity to replace your old inefficient damper with a brand new damper/chimney cap combo – which we highly recommend. Give us a call and we can walk you through a few options for damper repair, and chimney cap/damper installation.
I am selling my home. Do I need a chimney inspection prior?
While most municipalities don’t require a chimney inspection prior to a move, we think it’s a good idea. It could also increase the value of your home, or help you avoid a frustrating last minute haggling situation over repairs because you weren’t aware of an issue. We recommend a Level II chimney inspection prior to moving. Be sure the hand the completed report over to the new homeowners, or ensure your agent has a copy.
Is burning trash or non-wood products in my fireplace/stove really that bad?
Yes; and it could cause dangerous situations as well. One of the reason fireplaces and stoves are as safe as they are is because firewood burns cleanly, and leaves only minimal residue in your chimney, flue, and fireplace. In fact, seasoned firewood should only produce a mild, nearly clear smoke. Trash and debris on the other hand creates a black smoke – full of chemicals and residual material which can become lodged into your chimney and liner. When this occurs, damage to your chimney or stove can occur more quickly, and present health risks. While paper and wood generally won’t produce a toxic combination, when plastics, treated wood, chemicals and processed materials are burned together, they could create a toxic cocktail of fumes and gases which could wind up in your home, or in the air. Further, large pieces of trash which have caught fire can fall from the security of your fireplace or stove, and catch the inside of your house (or mantel) on fire. Avoid all of this and don’t burn trash in your fireplace or stove.
What is “seasoned wood”?
Simply put, “seasoned wood” is wood that has been air-dried for at least six months. It doesn’t matter where the wood came from – so long as it’s been cut and dried for six months, you have seasoned wood. Similar to Seasoned wood is “kiln-dried” wood. Kiln-dried wood is also technically seasoned wood, but was dried in an oven for about 75 minutes until all but 10% moisture is removed. Kiln-dried wood is also beneficial in that the process kills mold and mildew – plus any pests that might have infested the wood.
Why should I stack firewood?
Stacking firewood provides a few benefits. One, stacked firewood is much easier to manage, and takes up less space. It’s easier to grab a few pieces of wood from a stack than a pile, and stacked wood takes up less space. More importantly, stacked wood allows for air circulation, which allows for drying. This is the natural process for creating seasoned firewood. Wood stacked and kept dry for six months is “seasoned” and is the only thing you should be burning in your fireplace or wood burning stove.
Do animals make their homes in chimneys?
Unfortunately, yes. We have seen animals make nests and homes in chimneys. If your chimney has a robust cap on it, you’re less likely to have this issue. We see animals in chimneys that are: really old, seldom used, or damaged in some way (either the brick and liner is cracked allowing small animals to enter, or the chimney is missing a cap). This is a reason that inspections are really valuable – using a camera and light, our team can identify if there are animals or dangerous obstructions in your chimney, then conduct necessary repairs or upgrades to ensure it won’t happen again!
Smoke is coming back into my home. What do I do?
Are you seeing (or smelling) strong smoke wafting back into your home when you have a fire going? This is a sign you have an issue – and one that could be dangerous. We call this “backdrafting” and it happens when a chimney is not functioning properly. This could be because your chimney is obstructed, or has become damaged in some way. In rare instances, given chimney design and high, sustained winds, this could happen simply because of the weather.
What is the chimney sweep process?
Simply put, chimney sweeping is the process of cleaning your chimney to ensure it is in the best possible, and safest possible condition.
When I burn wood in my fireplace, something smells really bad. What could it be?
If you’re burning only seasoned, clean firewood in your fireplace, there is a good chance that what you’re smelling is burning creosote from your chimney. As creosote burns, it can emit a foul smell – especially in humid conditions. We recommend having your chimney cleaned. You can also invest in chimney deodorant logs (you generally just burn them) which can help alleviate bad odors.
